EXTREME DESERT XTERRA TRIATHLON – Mesa, Arizona
Coach Jared steps out of the injured reserves and makes his way back to the race course to once again become a triahlete. I didn’t set any land speed records but I sure had fun being out there. It has been over a year and a half since my last Triathlon (IM WI 2004) and needless to say my open water swimming was a little weak. I have been putting a lot of time in the water and swimming really fast in the pool However once back racing in the lake; chest got a little tight, I had way to much tension in my legs, and my sighting was a little shaky. These are all things that will get better as I get a few more races under my belt. This first race was meant for this very purpose.

It was a fairly competitive field with a ½ dozen pros and some elite amateurs. I came out of the water in 3rd with another pro and training buddy Jimmy Archer. I was pulling Jimmy for the first ½ of the swim. He was swimming strong and I wasn’t going to be able to drop him, so I swam some backstroke to relax and slow down in order to let him pass so I could practice drafting and relax for the 2nd ½ of the swim.

It was really hard for me to use my fitness when getting bounced around like crazy on the bike. There where two very steep and rocky climbs that forced most of us to hop off and push our bikes up the hill - except for the few really good mtn bikers who actually road up both of them very fast. I need to work on my mtn bike skills!

I have only been running consistently for about four weeks now which didn’t leave me in the best run shape but the great thing was that my heel felt fantastic! I just didn’t have a lot of power or muscle tension in my legs to get up to any really high speeds. I finished 4th which I am pleased with.

Cathy Yndested also did the Xterra race just two weeks after stellar performance at IM AZ. She finished 5th female over all. She said she felt strong on the run and a little week on the bike. Maybe this was because we got lost while pre-riding the course and road for about 3 hours the day before the race.

Saw a really cool foot long lizard that was a vivid orange and black on the bike along with a couple rattlers while on the run.

Southern California Sprint Triathlon:
Kevin Herbert finished 1st Amateur and 2nd overall. He broke 16minutes in the final 3 mile run. At 43 years old he is only getting faster!

At the 2nd Duathlon of the year on the North West Pacific Coast - Devin Kelly placed 5th overall bettering his last years finish by 12 places.

Can’t wait to hear about what happens next weekend!
